National Truck Driving Championships in Pittsburgh Showcases Best of the Best Truck Driving Skill

When people think about trucking, they often focus on the freight being moved. But behind every shipment is a truck driver whose commitment to safety keeps America’s supply chains running. This year, that commitment has earned national recognition for eight PITT OHIO drivers who have qualified for the 2026 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), the most prestigious safety competition in the trucking industry.

Taking place August 10-14 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, the 2026 NTDC will bring together the nation’s top truck drivers to compete in a rigorous demonstration of skill, knowledge, and safety performance. What makes this year even more special for PITT OHIO is that the company is sending a record eight drivers to the competition, the largest group of national qualifiers in company history.

Why the National Truck Driving Championships Matter

Often referred to as the trucking industry’s “Super Bowl of Safety,” the NTDC isn’t simply a driving competition. Drivers must first earn the right to compete by winning at the state level while maintaining outstanding safety records. Once qualified, they are tested on safety regulations, vehicle inspection procedures, driving skills, and industry knowledge.

In other words, qualifying isn’t just an accomplishment. It’s a reflection of years of dedication to safe driving and professionalism.

For PITT OHIO, the achievement reinforces a culture built around safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. The company has a long history of developing state champions, national qualifiers, and drivers who have achieved millions of accident-free miles throughout their careers.

A Record-Setting Achievement

This year’s record-breaking group of qualifiers represents terminals across the PITT OHIO network, demonstrating that safety excellence is embedded throughout the organization.

Among the standout accomplishments, Brandon Hose from the Cumberland, Maryland terminal earned Grand Champion honors after achieving the highest overall score among competitors in his state championship competition.

According to Jeff Mercadante, Chief Safety Officer at PITT OHIO, the achievement reflects much more than individual success.

“Having eight drivers qualify for the National Truck Driving Championships is an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to the dedication and safety culture that defines PITT OHIO,” said Jeff Mercadante. “These drivers represent the very best of our organization and the trucking industry.”

The Drivers Behind the Achievement

While every qualifier has a unique story, a common theme runs throughout their comments: safety comes first.

For Howard Friend of the Columbus terminal, advancing to Nationals is a reflection of habits developed every day on the job.

“Safe driving is something we practice every day, not just during competitions,” he said. “Advancing to Nationals is a rewarding recognition of that commitment.”

Meanwhile, Mike Miltenberger of Cumberland will be making his eighth appearance at the national competition, demonstrating the consistency and dedication required to compete at the industry’s highest level.

For first-time qualifier Jaram Maldonado from Cherry Hill, the opportunity represents the fulfillment of a personal dream.

“Competing in my first National Truck Driving Championships is a dream come true,” he said, noting that having family members attend the event in Pittsburgh makes the experience even more meaningful.

The enthusiasm is shared by drivers across the network, including Taylor Hardy, Robert Stokes, Nick Backes, and Alex Atkins, all of whom emphasized the importance of preparation, teamwork, and a strong safety culture in helping them reach the national stage.

Why Hosting the National Truck Driving Championship in Pittsburgh Is Meaningful

This year’s event carries added significance because it is being hosted in Pittsburgh, the city where PITT OHIO was founded and continues to maintain its corporate headquarters.

As thousands of drivers, families, industry leaders, and supporters gather in the city, PITT OHIO will have the opportunity to showcase not only its hometown pride but also the values that have guided the company for nearly five decades.

More importantly, the championships provide an opportunity to celebrate the professional drivers who keep freight moving safely every day. While only a select group earns the opportunity to compete nationally, their accomplishments reflect the dedication shared by drivers throughout the transportation industry.

Celebrating Safety, Professionalism, and Excellence

At its core, the National Truck Driving Championships serve as a reminder that safety is not a destination. It is a daily commitment.

As PITT OHIO’s record eight national qualifiers prepare to compete, they carry with them the support of more than 3,400 employees and a company-wide commitment to doing the right thing every day. Their success is a testament to the preparation and safety-first mindset that continues to define PITT OHIO’s approach to transportation and logistics.

Whether they return home with championships, trophies, or simply unforgettable memories, these drivers have already achieved something remarkable: they represent the very best of professional trucking and the safety culture that keeps America’s freight moving.
