Ryan Wilson recognized early on that providing for his future family was important to him. He searched for a job opportunity that paid well and had the work life balance he’d be looking for down the road. In 2005, Ryan enrolled in Truck Driving School because he knew this line of work would be in demand for years to come.
Ryan started his truck driving career as an over the road driver, but quickly understood this was not going to be the best long-term plan if he wanted a family in the future. “I began to educate myself on trucking companies where drivers are home daily and I found my next job at PITT OHIO,” Ryan said.
Over the next 12 years, Ryan worked as a Dockworker and a Linehaul Truck Driver at PITT OHIO’s Toledo Terminal, learning everything he could about the industry and PITT OHIO. “I sought out mentors who could provide me with guidance and support,” Ryan said. His leadership skills did not go unnoticed resulting in a promotion in July 2019 to an Operations Supervisor position. Ryan excelled in this leadership role and quickly gained the respect of his peers. In May 2022, PITT OHIO promoted Ryan to Assistant Terminal Manager and this is when his leadership skills really soared.
As an Assistant Terminal Manager, Ryan focused on creating a positive and supportive work environment for his team. He followed the standard PITT OHIO expects from their managers. Ryan empowered his drivers, gave them the freedom to do their jobs, and recognized their achievements. He also made sure they were well-trained and had access to the resources they needed to succeed. “I was given opportunities at the start of my career, including room to make decisions and learn from my mistakes,” he said. “PITT OHIO has helped me become a better driver and leader in our company today.”
The transition from truck driver to manager has been a challenging, but rewarding experience for Ryan. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and about the trucking industry,” he said. “To achieve the work life balance I knew I wanted, I also recognized how important it is to be intentional with my time both at work, and at home with my wife and two daughters.”
Ryan’s many years of service as a truck driver, dockworker, supervisor, and assistant terminal manager will serve him well in his new assignment as Terminal Manager in Indianapolis, IN. “I would not be in this position today if not for the support, leadership, and mentorship I received from my very first day on the job in 2007.
Ryan’s dedication to excellence and his natural ability to motivate and inspire others made him an invaluable asset to PITT OHIO. “PITT OHIO has been very generous to me and my family. When I talk to other employees, they feel the same way,” Ryan said. “Everyone works hard because they feel their efforts are appreciated. Employees from every PITT OHIO location I have worked in are grateful for the things PITT OHIO does for us. I am very grateful to the leaders of this company who saw something in me deserving of their time, talent and energy. I plan to pay it forward.
