Introducing a New Era of Sustainable Transportation

For truck drivers seeking opportunities with companies that prioritize sustainability, PITT OHIO’s commitment to sustainable transportation and innovative electrification offers more than just a forward-thinking workplace—it represents a chance to make a meaningful difference on the road and in the world. By joining a company that leads the industry in sustainable practices, drivers contribute directly to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and shaping a greener future for communities they serve. Working within such an organization not only aligns with growing global values but also provides the satisfaction of knowing each mile driven supports a mission of environmental responsibility and transformative change.

PITT OHIO marked a significant milestone in its sustainability journey with the completion of a comprehensive electrification infrastructure project at its Harrisburg terminal. This initiative, made possible through a strategic partnership grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Driving PA Forward program, sets a new benchmark for clean energy innovation in the Mid-Atlantic logistics sector.

The “Driving PA Forward: PITT OHIO Harrisburg Electrification Celebration” event showcased the company’s latest investments in advanced electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and facility upgrades. The project, developed over three years, underscores PITT OHIO’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting cleaner, more efficient transportation solutions across its service area.

Transformative Upgrades and Features for Sustainable Transportation

The Harrisburg terminal’s electrification project included a full electric utility service upgrade, featuring a new service drop, transformer, and switchgear. New exterior switchboards and panelboards were installed to power both the new charging units and existing facilities. The site now boasts EV charging infrastructure capable of supporting eight trucks, six forklifts, and four passenger vehicles. To ensure operational resilience, a one-megawatt backup generator was added, providing enough fuel capacity to support the added EV truck and forklift loads for a 24-hour outage.

Additional site upgrades included layout changes to accommodate the new infrastructure and operational needs, as well as interior adjustments for the installation of added switchgear and forklift charging units. These enhancements were the result of two years of dedicated design, permitting, and engineering efforts, carried out by a team of experts in electrical contracting and engineering.

Fleet Innovation for Sustainable Transportation

PITT OHIO’s electrified fleet now includes the Class 7 Mack Medium Duty Electric Box Truck and the Class 8 Freightliner eCascadia. The Mack MDe offers up to 15,800 lbs payload, a range of up to 230 miles per charge, and flexible charging options—AC charging at 19.2 kW (fully charged in 11 hours) or DC fast charging at 80 kW (fully charged in 2.5 hours). The Freightliner eCascadia features a high-capacity 438 kWh battery, advanced safety systems, and rapid 270 kW DC fast-charging capability.

With these additions, PITT OHIO’s alternative fuel fleet now totals 25 vehicles, further advancing the company’s leadership in sustainable logistics.

Celebrating Public-Private Partnership

The event featured remarks from Secretary Jessica Shirley of the Pennsylvania Department of Energy, who praised the project as “a model for how public-private partnerships can accelerate the adoption of clean transportation technologies and improve air quality for all Pennsylvanians.” Doug Brown, Chief of Staff for Senator Patty Kim’s office, also addressed attendees, highlighting the importance of investing in sustainable infrastructure to support local communities and drive economic growth.

Taki Darakos, Vice President of Vehicle Maintenance at PITT OHIO, reflected on the project’s significance: “This may be a celebration to mark the end of the electrification implementation, but it’s really just the beginning. Thanks to the visionary support of the Department of Environmental Protection, we are redefining the future of sustainable transportation—setting new standards for clean energy innovation and inspiring others to join us in building a smarter, greener tomorrow.”

The Harrisburg electrification project stands as a testament to PITT OHIO’s ongoing pursuit of environmental stewardship and industry leadership, demonstrating what’s possible when public and private sectors collaborate for a cleaner future.
