As a young child, Mike knew he wanted to be a truck driver. Family vacations started with a road trip in the station wagon where he and his brother would admire the trucks on the road. Mike was fascinated by the cargo the trucks were hauling and he knew at 8 years old, he wanted to be a truck driver driving for the best trucking company in the business.
Mike remembers watching television with his father when a commercial came on recruiting truck drivers. “Call the number on your screen to speak to a recruiter today,” he recalls. With his dad’s permission, Mike spent the next 5 minutes dialing the 1-800 number on his family’s rotary phone. “The recruiter asked how old I was and told me to call back in 10 years and he’d put me behind the wheel.”
Fast forward to the 1980’s and Mike is indeed behind the wheel of a truck. Initially driving dump trailers with hazardous waste, he eventually started hauling produce into Brooklyn, New York when his boss purchased a reefer trailer.
By the time he was in his late 20’s, hauling agricultural products at the time, Mike realized he was not getting any closer to this dream of spending the holidays with a big family or taking his ‘yet to be born’ kids camping. He noticed other tractors on the road that were missing a sleeper cab. “Those guys were going to be home, and I wasn’t,” Mike stated. He began his search for a regional job.
Driving for PITT OHIO gave Mike the opportunity to start a family with his wife and watch his children grow up. His hesitation initially was that he would become just a number in a large company. In his 32 years at PITT OHIO, Mike said, “Management has always been receptive to our [drivers] concerns. I think that’s what makes PITT OHIO stand apart from the rest. You realize quickly, you’re not just a number.”
Today, Mike is one of PITT OHIO’s drivers who has achieved the remarkable milestone of driving 3 million miles without a single accident or incident. PITT OHIO doesn’t treat its employees like mere numbers, but the impressive figure of 3 million miles Mike has achieved is something PITT OHIO takes immense pride in.
